Will I regret choosing nursing as a career?
Question by mnf4ever: Will I regret choosing nursing as a career?
I’ve been hearing a lot of negative things about my career choice: “you’re too smart to just be a nurse” “you’re taking the easy way out” “why don’t you become a doctor” “you’re just settling for less”…I know that this job is extremely stressful, and people look down on nurses, but I know it is something i could be proud of doing! I love helping people, love being put under pressure no matter how much i try to deny it, love the whole hospital environment, don’t mind the crazy hours I would have to work, and the salary is a bonus benefit too! I am not a science whiz although I am considered “above average” as my grades are mainly low A’s and high B’s in my science courses. My second career choice was journalism since I excel in written expression, but I find myself kicking and screaming to make writing a career. It is just one of those things where “even though you’re good at it, it doesn’t mean you love it and want to do it the rest of your life” …which should i pick? CONFUSED

Even though you might be good at it & you may not love it & want to do it the rest of your life, nursing will give you great experience & lots of options. You will be able to take your experience and decide what other roads you might want to take. There are many different areas of nursing that might interest you. Take some time to investigate what the field has to offer. Research into the various areas of nursing. You will be surprised.
What do you think? Answer below!

I work in healthcare and would much prefer nursing to the incredible costs and liability associated with being a physician! You will be much more in control of your on-call schedule, can be picky about what shifts you will work and (with experience and good grades) can choose the best assignments!
If you decide later, you can always take advanced coursework to become a Nurse Practitioner or Physcian Assistant… Again, the on call (if any) is not nearly as rough as it is for physicians. And if you prefer, there are many well-paid Nurse manager positions available to choose from.
Bottom line… If you want to take care of people becme a nurse. If you want to cure people become a doctor.
Good Luck!
Nursing is a great career and I admire you for choosing it. It takes a strong person to be in the nursing field. You can always wrk yourself through medical school having a nursing degree. Nursing has many areas you could specialize in. Not just in patient care. I don’t know of nurses being looked down at. Personally I look up to most of them esp if they haven’t become complacent. Good luck on your career choice
